In 2023, compared to 2022, there was a decrease in emissions of harmful substances and greenhouse gases, with the exception of emissions of two greenhouse gases (perfluorinated hydrocarbons and nitrous oxide), which remained unchanged, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) reported on Friday.

Sulphur oxides saw the largest decrease at 36%, followed by carbon dioxide at 26%. The NSI explained this with the energy sector using lower amounts of fuel.

A check with the NSI shows that, according to final data on air emissions, there was an increase in emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides, non-methane volatile hydrocarbons, and carbon dioxide in 2022, and a decrease in emissions of methane and carbon monoxide compared to 2021. There was no change in emissions of nitrous oxide and ammonia. Emissions of sulphur oxides in 2022 were 73,000 tonnes, nitrogen oxides and non-methane volatile hydrocarbons amounted to 96,000 tonnes and 76,000 tonnes respectively.
