More than 55% of Bulgarians have a positive attitude towards the European Union (EU), a survey by the Myara polling agency, presented on Friday at the Bulgarian News Agency’s National Press Club in Sofia, shows. The survey on Bulgarians’ attitudes towards the EU was conducted at the request of Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin (S&D/Bulgarian Socialist Party).

The survey was carried out between November 14 and 24, 2025. A total of 1,004 adult citizens were interviewed.

“Bulgarian society is not anti-European. At times it hesitates, it is critical, but more than 55% of Bulgarians have a positive attitude towards the EU, while around 40% have a negative one,” Vigenin commented. According to him, Bulgaria is “in favour” of the EU, but with certain conditions. “Bulgarians do not reject Europe as an idea; rather, they ask the question – what kind of Europe, for what purpose and at what cost?” he added.

The MEP noted that, in Bulgarians’ view, there is a lack of information about European policies and institutions. “More than 50% of Bulgarians say they do not receive information about the policies pursued at European level, and one quarter cannot name a single European institution,” he said.

The data from the sociological survey were presented by Myara sociologist Yanitsa Petkova. More than half of respondents confirm a positive attitude towards the EU: 55.7% are in favour, while 37.3% are against, she said. Older respondents, people living in smaller settlements, those with primary education, and representatives of lower-income groups tend to be more critical.

The sociologist also pointed out that Bulgarian society is divided over the adoption of the euro as Bulgaria’s currency. The data show that 36% of Bulgarians are in favour and believe it would have a positive effect on the country, 46% are against, and the remaining 18% are undecided.

As for whether Bulgarians would support Bulgaria leaving the EU, 50.1% responded negatively, while 39.4% expressed support. On the question of whether Bulgarians receive sufficient information about EU policies, 50.7% answered “yes”, 37.4% answered “no”, and 11.9% gave no answer. Regarding the direction of change since Bulgaria’s EU membership, 33.8% said the change has been positive, 41% said it has been negative, 20.5% said there has been no change, and 4.7% did not respond.

“There is a continuing pro-European attitude in our society. We need to work particularly on the issue of information in order to continue convincing people of the benefits of our EU membership. The generational dimension of the survey is very important,” said Myara agency founder Parvan Simeonov. According to him, the EU is an achievement for Bulgaria. “The European Union is now perceived as part of our daily lives; it has ceased to be a dream and has become an everyday reality,” Simeonov added.
