The first main goal of the millennium is environmental protection, Union of Bulgarian Teachers President Yanka Takeva said here on Monday. She participated in the second scientific and practical conference on green education for a sustainable future in Stara Zagora.

Takeva emphasized that the topic of environmental protection is extremely important, because only in this way can life on Earth be preserved. She recalled that in 1998 the Union of Bulgarian Teachers organized a series of conferences related to ecology and environmental protection. "We, Bulgarian teachers, paid significant attention to the topic even then," she recalled, adding that Monday's forum is a continuation of the work of Bulgarian teachers during this almost thirty-year period.

She commented that in the Millennium Development Goals set by the UN Member States, education occupies the fourth position. "This also gives a high advantage to education, because only educated, knowledgeable, capable people can take care of keeping nature clean," Takeva pointed out.

The forum was part of the European Commission's Education for Climate initiative, an open platform that unites teachers, students, experts and institutions in joint actions to develop educational solutions aimed at climate change and sustainability.
