Vice President Iliana Iotova proposes that Bulgaria’s old capitals should acquire special status to receive dedicated funding. On Wednesday, speaking to Bulgarian media in Cetinje, the historical capital of Montenegro, she voiced hope that the Bulgarian Culture Ministry would move forward with a draft law that has been stalled for two years.

"I’m a strong advocate and I believe the Culture Ministry under Minister Marian Bachev will revive the bill on the status of the old Bulgarian capitals – Pliska, Preslav, Veliko Tarnovo, and possibly other historic cities as well," Iotova told Bulgarian media.

She added that such special status would provide opportunities for substantial funding through European programmes and funds. "This would allow for cultural projects, routes, and the development of cultural tourism in collaboration with other old capitals in this part of Europe," the Vice President explained. According to her, such a status elevates these capitals to a different level and helps promote them on the European stage.

She noted that once Montenegro joins the European Union, joint cultural routes could be developed that would benefit not only businesses and tourism, but also both countries.

Iotova is on a visit to Montenegro until May 8.
