Disinformation could have an impact on the European Parliament (EP) elections unless action is taken, said Daniela Gitman, Secretary of State for European Affairs at the Romanian Foreign Ministry. She was speaking at the EU Meets the Balkans forum in Sofia on Monday.

According to her, Russia is starting to ever more seed political divisions in the Western Balkans and trying to rewrite the international order. In her words, the EU should find the right answers and play its decisive role: be the powerful significant factor on the international plain.

It should be realized that there is no rivalry between the Balkan countries that are EU members and the Western Balkans. It is the Member States' duty to provide political support and will for the enlargement process' progress. The benefits of EU enlargement should be constantly repeated, Gitman noted. The candidate countries should not only strengthen the reforms but also ensure irreversibility of the path to these reforms, she added.

The EU Meets the Balkans forum was organized by the European Liberal Forum, the ALDE Party and the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, with support from the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.
