The court case against the chairman of the defunct Ivan Mihailov Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Bitola, Lyupcho Georgievski, continued here on Monday with the questioning of the prosecution's witness Lambe Alabakovski.

At the start of the hearing, Georgievski said that he does not feel guilty. He is accused of distributing racist and xenophobic materials via electronic means, of hate speech, and of offending the Jews' feelings by opening his club on a street where Jewish homes are located.

Alabakovski, who was convicted of setting the club's front door on fire, told the court that he does not believe there should be a club named after a fascist "in Macedonia's heart, Bitola". Alabakovski was taking a question by the prosecution about his reasons for the arson. Asked by Georgievski's lawyer whether he is proud of setting the club on fire, Alabakovski refused to reply. He also turned down a question about whether he hates the club.

According to Georgievski's lawyer Nasser Raufi, the inclusion of Alabakovski as a witness in the case aims to rehabilitate him in some way for the arson.

Due to the absence of the prosecution's witness Goran Sadikario, Director of the Holocaust Museum in Skopje, the next court hearing will be held on December 18. The defence's witnesses will be heard then.

With the questioning of prosecution witnesses, the case against the chairman of the now-deleted association Ivan Mihailov Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Bitola Lyupcho Georgievski began on Friday in the Republic of North Macedonia. Georgievski's lawyer Nasser Raufi said that the charges in this case are for hate speech and for spreading xenophobia and racism through posts on the association's Facebook page. Among the prosecution's witnesses was Lambe Alabakovski, who was convicted for burning of the Cultural Centre door in Bitola, but will be questioned at the next hearing.

Bitola Prosecution Brings Charges of Incitement to Hatred, Xenophobia against Ivan Mihailov Association Chairman

The Bitola Prosecution Office has brought charges against the chairman of the Ivan Mihailov Association in Bitola, Lupcho Georgievski, who is accused of a repeated offence of inciting hatred or intolerance on national, racial, religious and other discriminatory grounds, as well as for dissemination of racist and xenophobic materials by electronic means, the local prosecution said.
