Director General for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Slavena Gergova met on Wednesday in Sofia with Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia to Bulgaria Agneza Popovska, the Foreign Ministry said on its website.

The two officials discussed the attack on Bekir Kadrieski, co-chairman of an association of Bulgarians in the town Struga in North Macedonia. 

The Bulgarian side expressed concern about the attack on Kadrieski and stressed the need for the competent authorities in North Macedonia to take swift action for an effective investigation and justice in the case, the Foreign Ministry said.

It was pointed out during the meeting that Bulgaria expects tangible results on the other incidents with Bulgarians and their associations in North Macedonia.

Kadrieski was assaulted on Tuesday, June 13, before noon. He was insulted verbally and then punched in the stomach. The man is in hospital with abdominal pains and is subject to medical tests.

The Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje and the Consulate General in Bitola are following the case, the Bulgarian Ambassador to North Macedonia Angel Angelov is in contact with Kadrieski and the Bulgarian Consul in Bitola is on site. 

Earlier on Wednesday, the Minister of Interior of the Republic of North Macedonia, Oliver Spasovski, announced that Kadrieski's attacker has been identified and arrested.
