Another round of talks between the government and teachers in Romania failed as a mass protest was staged again in Bucharest on Tuesday. The teachers' demand for a 20% pay rise was rejected, trade union leaders said, emerging from the latest meeting with the government.

According to them, the powerholders' proposal remained unchanged: a bonus of RON 4,000 for teachers and RON 1,500 for non-teaching school staff.

Under the circumstances, the strike will continue, the unions said. They called on President Klaus Iohannis to intervene urgently.

"We ask the President to mediate the conflict. He has a major role to play, he should intervene urgently if he wants to deescalate the situation," said Marius Nistor, President of the Federation of Education Unions.

Later in the day, the President's Administration said President Iohannis would receive the unions for a discussion.
