More than 100 cars and dozens of heavy-duty trucks are stranded at the border between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia between the checkpoints of Gyueshevo and Deve Bair. Some of them are on their way to Skopje to pay tribute to revolutionary Gotse Delchev on the occasion of his 151st birth anniversary.
Gotse Delchev’s grave at the Skopje Church of the Ascension [Sveti Spas] is a traditional place of veneration on this day. The revolutionary is celebrated as a national hero both by Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia.
Traffic was suspended around 9:00 on Saturday morning. Checkpoint officials explained that it was because of a glitch in the technical system which they expected to be fixed after noon.
Some of those in the stranded vehicles described the situation as a provocation. The chairman of the Macedonia Foundation, Viktor Stoyanov, said Bulgaria needed to respond to these actions appropriately.
Among the waiting cars are also some with number plates from Serbia and North Macedonia.
