Bulgarian writer Rene Karabash presented her book She Who Remains in Belgrade on Saturday, the novel being shortlisted for the International Booker Prize 2026.

Following its success in Bulgaria and translations into 15 languages, the novel She Who Remains has also been released in Serbian in a translation by Jasmina Jovanovic.

Set in the harsh regions of Northern Albania, the novel explores the phenomenon of sworn virgins - women who assume the roles of men to preserve family honour or avoid an undesired fate. The novel is written without capital letters and without editorial intervention.

Karabash told BTA that the story, while seemingly rooted in a Balkan context, addresses universal human relationships and has managed to resonate with international readers despite its "exotic" subject matter.

During the presentation, she said that while writing the novel, she experienced vivid images and emotions, aiming to conclude the book with a sense of universal love expressed through God, light and detail.

"Some say the devil is in the details, but I would say God is in the details. I wrote the final chapter in a microscopic way, so that the reader can fully immerse themselves in the present moment and feel the divine love with which the book ends," the writer said.
