On May 13, 1965, the Month of Humour and Satire was inaugurated in Sofia. Gabrovo (Central Bulgaria) started hosting humour and satire events on May 17.

In May 1973, during celebrations in Gabrovo as part of the traditional satire festival, the International Biennial of Humour and Satire was launched.

Covering the opening of the Month of Humour and Satire in Sofia, BTA reported that it was initiated by the Committee for Culture and Arts, the Union of Bulgarian Artists, the Union of Bulgarian Journalists and the editorial staff of the Sturshel newspaper.

The Month of Humour and Satire started with the Second National Exhibition of Bulgarian Caricature. Of 400 works submitted for it, the jury approved around 260 works of 33 cartoonists.

Two days later, on May 15, 1965, the Satirical Theatre inaugurated its new building in Sofia.
