“There will be more no-confidence votes,” said Krasimir Manov of the MECh parliamentary group, speaking from the National Assembly rostrum on Thursday after the fifth no-confidence vote against the government of Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov failed earlier in the day.

“There will be votes over finances, agriculture, drought, energy — and perhaps there will be a vote that will finally bring down this government,” Manov stated. “So, brace yourselves, gentlemen in government,” he added.

He recalled that during the first no-confidence vote, co-sponsored by MECh, the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms exited the ruling coalition. “With this latest vote, you, gentlemen in government, have for the first time managed to unite the opposition, despite its internal differences, which are at times quite deep,” Manov remarked.

Earlier in the day, the National Assembly rejected the fifth motion of no confidence against the Zhelyazkov cabinet. The proposed resolution was supported by 101 MPs, while 133 voted against it.

The motion was submitted last Friday at the initiative of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria parliamentary group, and was backed by MECh and the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms. The motion cited the government’s failure in the areas of internal order and security, justice, and the issue of state capture.
