The first improvements along the route of the Sofia Green Ring will become visible in September, the Sofia Municipality press service reported on Monday. In the run-up to the European Volleyball Championship, part of the future east section along Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard will be transformed to provide more convenient and safer pedestrian access to Arena 8888 Sofia.

Work is due to begin on clearing and preparing the route, constructing a temporary footpath and installing new lighting. The railway tunnel beneath Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard in the area of Aviation Square will be cleaned, refurbished and lit, and a new pedestrian access route with steps leading to the Green Ring route will be built from the local carriageway of the boulevard. Some of the improvements are intended to remain in place for the long term.

Sofia Green Ring is one of the Sofia Municipality’s large-scale strategic projects aimed at transforming nearly 30 km of abandoned and underused land around the wider centre of Sofia into a connected system of green urban spaces for walking, cycling, sport, leisure, play and culture. The ring aims to link Sofia’s major parks, the existing cycle network and numerous sports, cultural and educational facilities. The route passes through 30 neighbourhoods, and nearly 250,000 Sofia residents will have direct access to the new green space.

In June, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said that the Green Ring will showcase Sofia’s true potential.
