In the second quarter of 2025, Bulgaria's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.4%, compared to the second quarter of 2024 and by 0.9% compared to the first quarter of 2025, according to seasonally adjusted preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI).
In the second quarter of 2024, GDP grew by 2.1% compared to the second quarter of 2023 and by 0.5% compared to the first quarter of 2024, while in the first quarter of 2025 GDP growth was 3.1% on an annual basis and 0.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, also according to seasonally adjusted preliminary data.
Quarterly changes
In the second quarter of 2025, compared to the previous quarter, gross value added (GVA) in the economy grew by 0.7% on a quarterly basis. Seasonally adjusted data for the second quarter of 2025 show an increase in final consumption of 1.8% compared to the previous quarter. In the second quarter of 2025, exports of goods and services increased by 0.7%, while imports of goods and services decreased by 1.4% compared to the previous quarter, indicate the seasonally adjusted data.
Annual changes
In the second quarter of 2025, compared to the second quarter of 2024, GDP grew by 2.8%. GDP growth was driven by increases in the following economic activities: Public administration; education; human health and social work, by 8.2%, Construction, by 7.7%, Real estate activities, by 5.5%, Creation and dissemination of information and creative products; telecommunications, by 5.4%, Financial and insurance activities, by 5.1%, Culture, sports, and entertainment; other activities; activities of households as employers; undifferentiated activities of households in the production of goods and services for own consumption; activities of extraterritorial organizations and services, by 3.2%, Professional activities and scientific research; administrative and support activities, by 2.4%, Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transport, storage, and postal services; hotels and restaurants, by 1.2%.
Among the activities that registered a decline were: Agriculture, forestry, and fishing, by 4% and Mining; manufacturing; production and distribution of electricity, heat and gaseous fuels; water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation, by 3.1%.
In terms of final use components, final consumption had an impact on the recorded economic growth, with an increase of 8.3%. In the second quarter of 2025, compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year, there was a decrease in exports of goods and services - by 4.8%, while imports of goods and services increased by 0.1%.
