site.btaUPDATED Protests in Sofia, Plovdiv and Burgas over Suspected Leniency for ATV Driver Who Sent Five Pedestrians to Hospital
Protesters gathered in front of the Courthouses in Burgas (on the Black Sea), Plovdiv (Southern Bulgaria) and Sofia. They suspect that the 18-year-old ATV driver, who drove into a pedestrian area in the Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach, is getting a lenient treatment by the judicial authorities.
The man, reported to be the son of police officers, sent five pedestrians to hospital with injuries of various degrees. Two of them, a woman and her 4-year-old son, are still there. The woman is in a coma and the child is in stable condition.
The ATV driver was remanded in custody but was later sent to house arrest. The prosecution service contested that and on Friday the Burgas District Court ordered him returned to custody.
On Thursday, acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov requested that the Burgas Regional Prosecutor's Office assign the investigation to the National Investigative Service, the state prosecution said. According to them, “The facts and circumstances to be established in the case require the investigation to be conducted by an investigator with a high degree of qualification and experience in view of the legal complexity of the case.”
The Friday rallies were organized by the Angels on the Road Association which brings together families and friends of road accident victims.
