A total of 260,868 people, 16 towns, and 283 villages are affected by water supply disruptions as of August 18, said Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Ivanov during an emergency meeting of the Parliamentary Environment and Water Committee here on Thursday.

Ivanov pointed out that among the main problems behind the water shortage crisis are underground water sources, primarily in small settlements. He also noted that the northern city of Pleven, which has been plagued by water supply restrictions, lacks a built surface water source and is supplied from a river, as are the towns of Troyan, Lovech, and the surrounding villages.

He listed compromised internal water supply networks in most small settlements, as well as unauthorized use of water as being among the other causes of the water shortage. The Minister added that water shortage problems stem from climate change, reduced rainfall, and increased consumption of drinking water for household needs.

Ivanov explained that thanks to rainfall this year fewer towns are experiencing water supply restrictions compared to previous years, but this does not mean that conditions will continue to remain favorable.

There is enough water in artificially constructed water supply points, and in places where water supply comes from reservoirs, Ivanov added.
