The Bistritsa Babi choir, pianist Prof. Zheni Zaharieva, and violinist Darina Maleeva greeted the guests at an official reception hosted by the Republic of Bulgaria on the occasion of the opening of the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Bulgaria holds the presidency of the Committee session.

The event took place in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

"This evening will unite and inspire us. Our shared experience will strengthen in us the sense of common duty to preserve world heritage. I am convinced that with joint efforts, understanding, and cooperation, we will succeed in preserving the wonders of our world and passing them on to the generations that come after us," said the Bulgarian Minister of Culture, Marian Bachev.

UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, Ernesto Ottone, called for joint efforts to promote Paris as a catalyst of trust and peace, a driver of sustainable development, and, above all, as a guardian of a shared heritage.

Bulgaria is proud to be part of the collective effort to preserve and celebrate our shared heritage, noted the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Irena Georgieva.

Among those present at the official reception in Paris were also the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay; the Director of the World Heritage Centre, Lazare Eloundou Assomo; the Chair of the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Prof. Nikolay Nenov; the Deputy Minister of Culture and Head of the Bulgarian Delegation, Dr. Todor Chobanov; the Director-General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev; and the Ambassador of Bulgaria to France, Radka Balabanova.

The 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee runs until July 16 at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris under the presidency of Bulgaria. As part of the session, Bulgaria will present elements of its cultural and natural heritage. Later Monday, the July issue of LIK magazine – dedicated to Bulgaria and UNESCO – will also be officially presented at UNESCO.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on November 16, 1945. Bulgaria became a member on May 17, 1956, the same year its National Commission for UNESCO was established. The Commission coordinates activities between Bulgarian institutions and UNESCO.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is one of the two governing bodies responsible for implementing the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It is composed of representatives from 21 countries elected from among the 196 States Parties to the Convention.
