The average motorisation rate in the EU fell to 0.55 passenger cars per resident in 2023, down 0.01 from 2022, Eurostat said Wednesday.

Motorisation rates depend on both economic and local factors. In Valle d'Aosta, for instance, favourable tax policies contribute to high car ownership.

In 2023, the highest motorisation rates per 1,000 residents were in Italy: Valle d'Aosta (2,295), Trento (1,521), and Bolzano (915). Six of the top ten regions were in Italy, with others in Finland, Greece, the Netherlands, and Czechia.

The lowest motorisation rates were in Mayotte (83), Greece’s Peloponnese (206), and French Guiana (223).

In Bulgaria, regional differences were small: the South-Western region had 506 cars per 1,000 people, and the South Central region 441.
