The exhibition A Colourful Czech in Bulgaria will open on May 22 at the National Museum of Military History (NMMH) to mark the 165th birth anniversary and the 110th death anniversary of Jaroslav Vesin.

The exhibition showcases the works of the renowned Czech artist, who dedicated his life to Bulgaria and created some of the most powerful scenes in Bulgarian painting. In 1904, he became the first principal artist at the Ministry of War and is recognized as the founder of the battle painting genre in Bulgaria. He had a profound influence on Bulgarian art and the national painting school at the end of the 20th century.

The exhibition will feature more than 40 of his works from the collections of the National Museum of Military History, the Sofia City Art Gallery, and the Regional History Museum Sofia. These include paintings, graphics, watercolours, ink drawings, chalk, and pencil works depicting everyday life scenes, landscapes, the peacetime life of the Bulgarian Army, and experiences during the Balkan Wars.

A special addition to the exhibition is an interactive application that will offer visitors an in-depth look at Vesin’s life and work, as well as digital images of his paintings held in museums and galleries in Czechia and Slovakia.

The exhibition is organized by the Sofia City Art Gallery and the Regional History Museum Sofia, in partnership with galleries from Czechia and Slovakia.
