A total of 17,502 alerts regarding violations of labour rights in 2024 have been cited in the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria’s (CITUB) 10th Annual Report on violations of the right to work, CITUB said on Wednesday.

The report highlights the need for urgent and coordinated action both at the legislative level and among control authorities. The data clearly indicates that, despite the legal framework, labour rights continue to be persistently violated across many enterprises and institutions, and protection mechanisms prove ineffective or difficult for workers to access. The CITUB calls for stronger control mechanisms, improved legal protection for workers, and a reinforced role for trade unions as key partners in the process of ensuring decent working conditions.

“We have zero tolerance for workplace violations - whether committed by employers or workers,” Labour and Social Policy Minister Borislav Gutsanov said while attending the marking of International Workers Memorial Day and World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Monday. He added that more than 13,000 inspections were carried out in the first quarter of 2025, uncovering 914 cases of people working without employment contracts.
