Burgas is hosting the European Universities Debating Championships, with over 560 entrants, Burgas Mayor Dimiter Nikolov wrote on Facebook.
Burgas has been selected over London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Munich and Saint Petersburg.
Deputy Education Minister Nataliya Miteva attended the opening of the Championships. "I know from experience that debating develops skills which will be useful throughout your life. The most important skills are those to continue to learn and to challenge yourselves,” said Miteva in her address.
The event will bring together over 240 teams from all over Europe which will debate on socially significant topics using the British Parliamentary Debate format, where four teams of two members each debate on a topic with 15 minutes to prepare. Judges decide the winner.
Nikolai Angelov and Rumen Marinov, who were finalists at the World Universities Debating Championships in Madrid, are expected to participate.
The Championships will be on until August 25.
