We joined NATO and the EU because we saw them as the major perspective for Bulgaria's development, but also because we shared their values, said Minister of Defence Todor Tagarev in a speech during a discussion on "Bulgarian national interest in the changing geopolitical environment and the European perspective of the Western Balkans". The event was organized by the Sofia office of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
Minister Tagarev noted the importance of the security environment for the realization of Bulgaria's national goals. "In order to achieve the environment in the Balkans that we want, the Ministry of Defence has quite serious responsibilities. In fulfilling these responsibilities we are participating in the forces in Kosovo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Tagarev said. He stressed that Bulgaria is working with its NATO allies, as well as with those aspiring to join the Alliance.
Tagarev also commented on the issue of the war in Ukraine, noting that assistance to Ukraine is important not only from a moral point of view, but also for achieving more lasting stability in the region. "Our interests, the goals we have set for ourselves, are laid down in the national security strategy," Tagarev noted, adding that an analysis is to be made to see whether there is a need to update the strategy, given Russia's war in Ukraine.
