The state will subsidize the tuition of 42 611 freshmen in the coming academic year, the Government decided at its regular meeting on Wednesday, endorsing the number of students and doctoral students to be enrolled in the state higher education institutions and scientific organizations of the Republic of Bulgaria in the academic year 2023-2024, the Government information service said.

The enrolment plan underwent partial restructuring in recent days, following comments received from employers' organisations and after the expiry of the public consultation period. Compared to the original draft, which was published for public consultation, the number of places for first-year students in the professional field of Informatics and Computer Science have been increased, while those for students in the professional fields of Psychology, Administration and Management and Economics have been reduced.

The total number of subsidized places for freshmen for the next academic year has been increased by 1,289. This is the result of an analysis of a complex set of circumstances, one of which is the higher number of high school graduates - 2,240 more than last year.

On the proposal of the Ministry of Health, the number of places in the professional field of Health Care and Public Health has been increased for the specialities of Nurse, Midwife and Health Care Management. Following requests from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of the Interior, admissions have also been increased in the professional fields of Military Affairs and National Security.

According to the plan, 2,228 doctoral students are to enroll in state universities in the academic year 2023/2024. Another 349 places will be opened at research organizations, including 202 at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and 65 at the Agricultural Academy.
