For yet another year, the blooming red flowers of the endangered peony species Paeonia Peregrina bring nature lovers and wildlife photographers to Northeastern Bulgaria. The glossy red flowers of around 10 cm in diameter with prominent yellow stamens usually bloom in May and last just around ten days.
The biggest wild population of the endangered flowering plant in Bulgaria is located in the Gornata Koriya protected area near the village of Dobrotitsa, Silistra Region. Gornata Koriya was declared protected specifically because of the wild peonies in the forest there. The area spans over 7.09 ha.
In Razgrad Region, the unique sight of blooming Paeonia Peregrina can be observed in a protected forested area near the village of Todorovo as well as near the villages of Belovets, Bozhourovo, and Podayva. The herbaceous perennial can also be seen in the Yaylata National Archaeological Reserve on the Black Sea cost, where another protected species of peony, the fern leaf peony (Paeonia tenuifolia), also grows.
Paeonia Peregrina is protected under the Medicinal Plants Act to prevent its unregulated harvesting in the wild. The plant has significant medicinal properties: it has an anti-inflammatory, sedative, and analgesic effect, and is used in the treatment of lung issues, insomnia, chronic fatigue, colitis, and epilepsy, among others.
Paeonia Peregrina is also part of local Bulgarian customs. It is used in wedding bouquets as a symbol of a happy marriage. It is believed that wherever the peony grows, evil forces disappear.
