Cadets studying ship machines and mechanisms at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna (on the Black Sea) ran diagnostics on one of the diesel generators of the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421). That diesel generator was showing deviation from the normal values of work.
The check was supervised by two lecturers of the future mechanics accompanying them aboard RSV 421: Assoc Prof Delyan Hristov, head of the Ship Machines and Mechanisms Department, and Commander Ivaylo Bakalov, head of the Educational Activity unit at the Naval Academy.
The cadets measured diesel generator number 2 and then used a Mean Indicative Pressure (MIP) calculator to conduct overall diagnostics of the machine, including of its fuel apparatus, Assoc Prof Hristov told BTA. “We decided that the cadets should do the check, because that is one of the routine tasks in the work of a ship mechanic, part of the daily life aboard the ships. It is done regularly or when needed in case of a deviation of the diesel generators' indicators," he explained.
Assisting in the diagnostics were two RSV 421 crew members: First Engineer Dimitar Bahchevanov and Senior Engineer Dimitar Dimitrov.
