Court Upholds Indefinite Custody for Turkish Heroin Trafficker

Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria, September 9 (BTA) - The
Appellate Court in Plovdiv upheld a lower court decision that
Turkish national Nail Salaam should be held in indefinite
custody on charges of trafficking 33.5 kg of heroin across the
border from Turkey into Bulgaria.

The price of the drug is estimated at 3 million leva
(approximately 1.5 million euro). The offence carries, on
conviction, a sentence of up to 20 years' imprisonment.

The heroin was intercepted on August 24. Salaam, who lives in
Belgium, was acting in complicity with another man, Turgut
Duran. They were travelling in a Mercedes-Benz and the drug was
found in the vehicle, the Plovdiv Palace of Justice recalled.

The indefinite custody for Salaam, originally imposed by the
District Court in Haskovo, was upheld because the Plovdiv
Appellate Court deemed it possible that the suspect could
abscond or commit another crime. SN/VE
