The mayor of the village of Solishte in the southern Kardzhali Region was detained for involvement in a vote-buying scheme for the upcoming elections on April 19, the acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, wrote on Facebook on Monday.
The mayor allegedly provided money to the owner of a local shop with the aim of offering customers free treats and persuading them to vote for a specific political party, Kandev wrote.
Two witness interrogations were carried out before a judge in connection with the case.
A pretrial investigation was opened. The mayor remains in custody, Kandev said.
