By March 30, the total volume of water in major and significant reservoirs is 4,888.7 million cu m. This represents 74.80% of their total capacity, approximately 20% more than the volume in March 2025, the Environment Ministry reported on its website. The ministry noted that this percentage is the highest recorded in the last seven years for the same calendar period. The Environment Ministry manages the water resources in 52 significant and complex reservoirs.

Reservoirs that are 100% full include Kamchia, Yasna Polyana, Asenovets, and Pchelina, while the following reservoirs are over 90% full: Srechenska Bara, Hristo Smirnenski, Borovitsa, Studena, Domlyan, Alexander Stamboliyski, Krichim, and Ivaylovgrad.

With the arrival of spring and the expected high water levels, companies managing the major and significant reservoirs are taking measures to ensure available capacity by preemptively releasing water to handle increased inflow and maintain optimal levels, the ministry added.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, rainfall will continue until the end of this week, with particularly heavy precipitation expected on Wednesday night into Thursday in southern Bulgaria and mountainous areas.

On March 30, river levels in most river basins will decrease, but as water flows downstream, increases are expected in the lower river sections. On April 1 and 2, rainfall is expected to raise river levels. Water volumes will remain below alert thresholds, the ministry noted.
