Addressing the Third International Cyrillic Forum, titled "Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age", caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov said that without the Cyrillic alphabet and the collective memory it preserves, Bulgaria would not exist today. The forum opened on Wednesday at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. The event is organized by President Iliana Iotova and features plenary reports and discussions focused on the Cyrillic script and its role in the digital age.
Todorov emphasized that the alphabet lies at the foundation of everything. He said that, unlike most writing systems, the Cyrillic alphabet is not merely a sequence of letters, each character carries its own meaning, forming a deeper message embedded in the script itself. He recalled that what sparked the Bulgarian National Revival was not an armed act, but the writing of the Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya book.
"If we want to destroy a nation, it is enough to destroy its writing system. Without it, it will lose its memory, and without memory, there is no future," the Minister said.
The forum is held under the auspices of the National Commission of Bulgaria for UNESCO, with the cooperation of the Education and Science Ministry and the support of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
The 2026 edition of the event brings together scholars from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Bulgarian universities, alongside international speakers from Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Kazakhstan, and China. Topics include "alphabet wars" in the Slavic world, the language of the media, and the digitization of early printed works in the 21st century.
The Third International Cyrillic Forum also expands its geographic scope, featuring research on the use of Cyrillic in China and among Turkic-speaking communities.
