Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) issued a statement in connection with the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, which was read by CC-DB MP Yavor Bozhankov in Parliament on Wednesday. The statement urged the public to remember the victims of the Holocaust to avoid repeating the terrors of the past.

CC-DB stated that one lesson from the past is that nationalism in any of its forms, no matter whether based on racial or class motives, leads to war. "The worst atrocities in human history were motivated in this way," Bozhankov said.

The statement continued: "Many people today say they want a return to a Europe of nation states. Nationalism and extreme populism are on the rise across Europe again. And I would understand if we hadn't experienced it, if it were something new, but what kind of person can look at the concentration camps, at that Europe of constant bloodshed, and ask for more of the same?".

Bozhankov said that Europe today is once again haunted by the ghost of war, which is why people should ponder which events led to this.

The MP referred to the fact the Bulgaria refused to deport to Nazi concentration camps any of the 50,000 Jews living on its territory during WW2, which he described as a cause for national pride. He concluded: "Today, our country has once again chosen the side of good. And today, Bulgaria once again stands on the side of humanism."
