The outgoing Cabinet has approved a decree amending regulations drafted by the Ministry of Interior to align existing legislation with the adoption of the euro as Bulgaria’s official currency, effective 1 January 2026. The changes aim to ensure legal clarity, security, and predictability in financial relations between state institutions, citizens, and businesses under the new currency.

The amendments update a range of ordinances and regulations applied by the Ministry of Interior, including rules governing financial transactions, compensations, fees, and other obligations previously expressed in Bulgarian levs. All monetary values are now officially expressed in euros in compliance with EU regulations, ensuring accuracy and consistency.

The decree was prepared in line with the National Plan for the Introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria and the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria Act. It was also subject to public consultation, with all feedback incorporated into the final version.

The amendments follow principles of transparency, efficiency, and protection of the public interest. No new administrative burdens are introduced, and no additional obligations are imposed on citizens or organizations. The decree serves to synchronize the existing legal framework with the country’s new currency.
