The strength of the Military Medical Academy (MMA) comes from the people who work there, said the MMA Chief, Major General Prof. Ventsislav Mutafchiyiski, here on Monday. He was speaking at a ceremony marking the 134th anniversary of the Academy.
The celebration was also attended by the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, Minister of Health Silvi Kirilov, Deputy Minister of Defence Adelina Nikolova, Vice President Iliana Iotova, medical professionals, and cadets.
Mutafchiiski said in his speech that 107 cadets and 13 nurses are currently studying at the MMA. Fifty-four have already completed their training and are on active military duty in military units, and six of them are on missions abroad, he specified. He said that the Academy is accredited for 34 doctoral programmes and has 88 doctoral students at this time. Fifty-seven specialties are accredited and there are 173 students enrolled in them, and over 900 people have completed courses in highly specialized activities this year alone and are certified by the Military Medical Academy.
Mutafchiiski highlighted the role of the Military Medical Academy's Simulation Training Centre, established in 2021, which has trained about 1,300 combat medics, paramedics, doctors, and cadets, with 511 specialists trained in the last year alone. "Throughout its existence, the MMA has always been the last resort for treating the most severe cases. We have not only matched but also exceeded the growth in hospitalizations and assistance we provided to patients before the [COVID-19] pandemic," said the head of the Military Medical Academy.
He reported that over 66,000 patients had been treated at the hospital's inpatient wards, 230,000 outpatient examinations had been performed, and 18,500 operations had been carried out. In November, the first kidney transplants were performed, the result of several years of effort by specialists, Mutafchiisky said. This year, the Military Medical Academy celebrated 20 years of cochlear implants, thanks to which hundreds of children have been given the chance to hear thanks to the professionalism of the people at the Military Medical Academy, the MMA head noted.
Over 7,000 people donated blood thanks to the work of the blood transfusion centre team. Together with the State Agency for Child Protection, campaigns were conducted among 4,000 children to explain the dangers of drugs, which continue to this day, Mutafchiiski added.
He recalled that this year, the Military Medical Academy acquired a robot, which has performed 305 operations in 305 calendar days. According to statistics from the robot's manufacturer, the Military Medical Academy is the fastest growing robotic centre in Europe. There are 17 robots in Bulgaria, and the MMA already performs 10% of the robotic operations in the country, the head of the Academy said.
