Following two days of torrential rainfall, river levels have risen and flooding risks have increased in several parts of the Republic of North Macedonia, the country’s Hydrometeorological Service reported. The heaviest rainfall over the past 72 hours -104 litres per square metre - was recorded in Lazaropole, while most cities in the western part of the country saw more than 60 litres per square metre.
In Skopje, the level of the Vardar River is just below the promenades along its quay. Water levels in the upper section of the Vardar basin remain high, and further rises are expected along the river’s middle and lower reaches.
Water levels remain high in the Radika River basin and its tributaries, and the Treska River, with a possibility of minor localized flooding near the village of Plasnica. Water levels in the Crna and Pcinja rivers have risen as well, though no immediate danger of overflow has been reported.
On Wednesday, heavy rainfall caused disruptions in Tetovo. Landslides occurred at several points along roads throughout North Macedonia.
Meteorologists warn that due to ongoing cyclonic activity, the period of variable cloudiness and scattered rainfall will continue. On Friday and throughout the weekend, more heavy rainfall - exceeding 30 litres per square metre in 24 hours - is expected, accompanied in some areas by strong winds and thunderstorms.
