The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sofia University hosted a series of workshops dedicated to the Media Masters educational game, which took place in September and October, the university's press centre said on Monday.
Over 110 students and pupils of different ages had the opportunity to try out the board game and the mobile application it works with during the demonstration sessions at the faculty. The culmination was a large workshop dedicated to recognizing fake news, during which participants were placed in realistic media situations and had to recognize fake news, misleading publications and hidden advertising.
"Media literacy is not just a tool, but an absolutely mandatory skill in today's world that young people must learn to use. Media Masters shows us through play how we can teach young people to be more attentive, more active and more engaged with the information that surrounds them," Prof. Vesselina Valkanova, Dean of the Faculty of Media and Communication, said.
The workshop at the Faculty of Media and Communication marks the beginning of the second series of events that will present the game to the Bulgarian public. The initial version of the mobile application and the board game were shown in April 2025. Since then, the game has received additional updates, with many new questions and improvements to the mobile application, the Faculty noted.
After the game session, the participants took part in a discussion, in which they talked about the role of the media in democratic societies and shared their observations on the ways in which disinformation influences public attitudes.
The Media Masters project aims to build a more informed and critically thinking European community through play, dialogue and collaborative learning. It is funded under the CERV programme (Citizenship, Equality, Rights and Values) and brings together 14 partners from nine countries.
