The 27th Kukerlandia International Masquerade Festival opened Wednesday in Yambol with the validation of a special postal-philatelic edition entitled Bulgarian Masquerade Games.
The philatelic edition, which has a circulation of 8,000 copies and a nominal price of EUR 1.15, was designed by Dr. Teodor Liho, lecturer at the Department of Advertising Design at the National Academy of Arts. The ceremony was attended amongst others by Yambol Deputy Mayor Encho Keryazov, Yambol Municipal Council chair Anton Shikov, the head of the regional post office Stanka Edreva.
The postage stamp features two images that are the result of a long-term ethnographic study of masquerade games in the Yambol, Pernik and Smolyan regions, Liho told BTA. "And if we have to compare the different ethnographic areas, what is typical of Yambol Region is this unique colour and cheerfulness," he commented.
Yambol hosts the 27th Kukerlandia International Masquerade Festival from February 26 to March 1. The forum is described as a unique Bulgarian event that preserves and promotes the country’s intangible cultural heritage, marking Bulgaria’s presence on the global cultural map in a distinctive way. This year’s edition will be dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Bulgaria’s membership in UNESCO, in line with the goals of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
