The aviary in the adaptation centre at the Vulture School in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains was cleaned and disinfected for the reception of seven young Egyptian vultures in the upcoming week, he Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) reported. The young birds will spend over two months in adaptation and training to prepare them for life in the wild.
Some of the birds were donated by European zoos to help grow the population of the endangered species in Bulgaria, while others had to be rescued from their nests in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains last year.
The BSPB also reported that registration for the 2024 National Ornithology Olympiad has started. The event is open to children between fifth and eighth grade. The goal is to awaken children's interest in the world of birds and responsibility towards their conservation, the organizers said.
