The captain of the UAE Team Emirates squad, Adam Yates, is withdrawing from the Giro d’Italia, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 33-year-old Briton was among the main riders involved in Saturday’s crash about 23 km from the finish of Stage 2 between Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo. Despite visible injuries and poor condition, he still crossed the finish line 13:46 minutes behind stage winner Guillermo Torres Silva (Uruguay) of the Astana team.
Yates has stitches on his ear, but it has been assessed that his condition does not allow him to start Stage 3 between Plovdiv and Sofia, which led to his withdrawal. The UAE team had already lost Jay Vine and Marc Soler, and following Yates’ exit, only five riders remain in the squad.
For Yates, this is another unfortunate episode at the Giro d’Italia, as he previously suffered heavy crashes in 2017 and 2025. Last year, his twin brother Simon Yates won the Giro d’Italia, before later withdrawing from another race.
“Unfortunately, yesterday we were heavily affected by the Stage 2 incident. Jay Vine suffered a concussion and an elbow fracture. Marc Soler has a pelvic fracture. At this stage, neither of them is expected to require surgery. Adam Yates suffered severe abrasions and a torn left ear. He was initially checked on site for concussion and was cleared to continue, but later showed symptoms of delayed concussion. He will not start today’s Stage 3,” said of UAE Team doctor Adrian Rottuno.
“All three are under the supervision of our medical staff and will return home in the coming days to continue their recovery and rehabilitation,” he added.
