site.btaPianist Mario Angelov Performs Works by Bulgarian Composers in London

At a special event hosted by the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London, pianist Mario Angelov performed music by renowned Bulgarian composers Pantcho Wladigeroff, Dimitar Nenov, and Krasimir Kyurkchiiski. The occasion marked two significant anniversaries: 60 years since the first issue of LIK, the Bulgarian News Agency’s (BTA) magazine for literature, art, and culture, and 90 years since the founding of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR). Special editions of LIK celebrating both milestones were presented by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and BNR Director General Milen Mitev.
The first part of the program included Nocturne from Novelettes, Op. 59 by Pantcho Wladigeroff, and two songs arranged by Krasimir Kyurkchiiski.
The first song, Kalimanku Denku, was described by Angelov as a “love song from the Strandzha region—impossible and sacred,” evoking a sense of longing and reverence. The second, Tell Me, White Cloud, was called “a ballad of Bulgarian nostalgia,” expressing a deep emotional connection to homeland and roots.
The second part of the concert featured Miniatures by Dimitar Nenov, which Angelov described as short pieces reflecting inner emotional states, infused with memories of Bulgaria and the searching spirit of a romantic. He emphasized Nenov’s role in Bulgarian cultural history as the first music director of Radio Sofia, who helped bring European classical music to Bulgarian audiences via radio broadcasts.
Mario Angelov is a distinguished graduate of Bulgaria’s top music institutions and winner of numerous national and international awards. His career has been closely tied to Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), where he has been a pianist, music producer, and since 2023, Director of the Music Production and Ensembles Directorate.
