Bulgaria’s Consul General in Lyon, Nadia Zhivkova-Vaneva, welcomed Bulgarian communities from around the world at the 10th annual folklore festival, mottoed "Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance" (Une ronde autour du monde). The festival opened at the Palais des Sports in Lyon, France, on Friday.
In her address to participants and guests, Zhivkova-Vaneva noted that the event has evolved from a simple idea into a powerful symbol of belonging, memory, and hope for Bulgarians living abroad. “What began ten years ago as a bold dream to create a place where Bulgarians abroad can feel at home through the sound of the gaida [bagpipe commonly played in the Balkans] and the rhythm of the horo dance has grown into a tradition that unites thousands,” she said.
The Consul General emphasized that the growth of the gathering is not only in scale but also in the strength of the Bulgarian community it represents. “Over the years, thousands of patriotic Bulgarians from around the world have brought here not just traditional costumes and dance steps, but the very soul of Bulgaria,” she said, adding that folklore, language, and spirit have been preserved and passed on to the next generation.
Zhivkova-Vaneva also acknowledged the efforts of every dance group, choreographer, and child learning traditional Bulgarian steps far from home, and extended gratitude to the organizers of the event for creating a space where Bulgarian culture can thrive.
She highlighted the symbolic significance of the festival’s anniversary, stating that ten years is not just a milestone but a testament to the community’s resilience and dedication.
“Let this jubilee gathering bring you inspiration, new friendships and unforgettable memories,” she concluded.
