A Bessarabian Bulgarian from the Kubei Municipality in the Bolhrad district of Ukraine was killed on the front line in mid-May. The fallen serviceman was Junior Sergeant Stepan Nikolov, who served in military unit A7041. The news was announced by the Kubei Municipality on its Facebook page.

He was killed in the Kharkiv Region.

The 49-year-old man was originally from the Bulgarian village of Vynohradne, where he will be buried.

Bulgarians in Odesa Region number more than 150,000 and are the third largest community, based on Ukraine’s latest official census. About 50,000 to 60,000 Bulgarians live in Odesa itself. The largest concentrated Bulgarian population is in Bolhrad District, Izmail District and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi District.
