One cannot change the history of things that have happened, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who was King of Bulgaria from 1943 to 1946 and prime minister from 2001 to 2005, said on Saturday while examining the modernized archives in the building of the Bulgarian News Agency in Sofia. He later took part in the 20th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media at the National Press Club of BTA here, 20 years after also having participated in the First World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Sofia on May 23, 2005.

"Whether you agree with it or not is another matter, but the fact is there and cannot be erased," he emphasized during the visit to BTA's headquarters, where he was welcomed by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and was shown reproductions of photographs from the BTA archive of him together with his father, Boris III. A copy of a special issue of the BTA bulletin from June 16, 1937, related to the birth of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was also presented, as well as news related to the most important moments of his life.

Valchev recalled how in 1903 the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising is reported as a Bulgarian uprising in the BTA bulletins and the press of Western Europe, Constantinople and the USA. "This turns out to be great historical evidence, as you cannot change yesterday's news", he stressed.

BTA celebrated its 127th anniversary on February 16, 2025 with a reading room for the archives, its own font, and a renovated newsroom. The agency today has modern archive storage facilities, equipped with new shelving systems and precise air conditioning for storage, in accordance with archival standards in Bulgaria. Under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, the agency equipped premises for the library and archives from February 16, 1898 to the present day with a centre for their digitization, which will be completed in 2026.

From July 2023 to the beginning of May this year, nearly 800,000 out of a total of 3,500,000 pages of paper media, about 40,000 out of a total of 2,000,000 frame negatives and about 120,000 pages of bulletins on microfiche out of a total of 2,000,000 pages were digitized. At the beginning of 2024, the archive array of BTA bulletins was registered as part of the National Archive Fund of Bulgaria.

BTA also has a new information centre called BTA Reading Room, which will be open to readers from Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It provides access to the BTA archives to all interested parties in the fields of journalism, culture, education and science. All schoolchildren and university students will also have access to the archives.

This year’s forum is held with the support of A1, Aurubis Bulgaria, BGR Group Ltd., Geotechmin, Glavbolgarstroy Holding, Logistic Systems Ltd., the 13 centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund, SFA Automotive Ltd. (the official importer of Opel in Bulgaria), Postbank, Pachkov Ltd., and SOF Connect (the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport).
