The autonomy of the Taraclia District will be preserved under the forthcoming reform of Moldova’s state administration, Moldova’s Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu told Bulgarian Ambassador Maya Dobreva during a meeting on Monday, the Bulgarian Embassy in Chisinau reported on its Facebook page.

On November 6, the Taraclia District Council unanimously adopted an appeal addressed to the leadership of Bulgaria and to the Bulgarian members of the European Parliament. The appeal states that, under the reform strategy prepared by Moldova’s authorities for 2023–2030, Taraclia District is slated to lose its status as an independent administrative-territorial unit and to be incorporated into the Southern Region. The councillors expressed concern over the potential dissolution of Taraclia District as part of Moldova’s administrative-territorial reform and called on Bulgaria to defend the rights of the Bulgarian community by advocating for the district’s preservation as the Taraclia National Cultural Region.

According to the diplomatic mission, Munteanu emphasized that the Bulgarian community represents an important part of Moldovan society, consisting of hardworking people with enduring values and traditions, and that the country’s ethnocultural diversity enriches national development.

Ambassador Dobreva expressed gratitude for the conditions provided to preserve the language, culture and traditions of the Bulgarian community in Moldova. She highlighted the success of the Taraclia branch of Angel Kanchev University of Ruse and the enrolment of nearly 260 new students, noting that in the medium term this would boost the region’s economic, educational and cultural development and could help mitigate negative demographic trends.

During the discussion, both officials noted the active bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including education, culture, energy and transport infrastructure. Ambassador Dobreva confirmed that Bulgaria remains a consistent supporter of Moldova’s European integration.
