The region remains fragile despite the ceasefire in the Middle East, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said on Monday following a meeting with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, who is visiting Bulgaria.

The Black Sea is a region that borders a war zone. "We insist that the Black Sea receive greater attention on the agendas of NATO and the European Union," Georgiev noted.

He said that Bulgaria has a vested interest in ensuring the region’s security, particularly in areas like maritime safety. He stressed the importance of military mobility and transport corridors, specifically citing Corridor 8 as an example.

German Foreign Minister Wadephul began a two-day visit to Bulgaria and Romania on Monday. The talks will focus on support for Ukraine and strengthening European security and defence capabilities, dpa reported, quoting the German Foreign Ministry.

"I would like to begin by sharing the positive development of the day: the ceasefire reached between Israel and Hamas. This long-awaited agreement represents significant progress, due in large part to the efforts of President Trump and his administration. The ceasefire holds substantial value and importance for our countries and peoples.," Georgiev said during a joint statement after the meeting.

"The release of hostages by Hamas led to the freeing of a Bulgarian citizen, several German nationals, and other civilians," he said.

"From this point, the healing process begins. The aim is to achieve Gaza's recovery, end the suffering and humanitarian crisis, and provide a new direction for the Middle East. Throughout this process, Bulgaria and Germany have acted as friends and partners, sharing similar views on approaches to establishing peace in the region," Georgiev added.
