for COVID-19 Vaccination

Sofia, December 10 (Desislava Toncheva of BTA) - The United Nations Association of Bulgaria (UNABG) has launched an information campaign entitled "Vaccine: Myths and Facts". The project incudes a series of short video interviews with Bulgarian doctors, health experts and celebrities and public figures about the COVID-19 vaccines, one of the project's organizers, Ekaterina Dimitrova of UNABG, told BTA.

The campaign was initiated by Dimitrova, who co-created the Health Shield Europe Initiative, and UNABG Management Board member Petar Buchkov. The idea is to provide comprehensive and clear information about COVID-19 and more specifically about the vaccines against the virus which are still subject of a heated controversy in Bulgaria. The country's official vaccination campaign has proved to be challenging and ineffective, to put it mildly, so civic organizations like UNABG are stepping up.

The focus of the series goes beyond COVID-19 to cover overall education, awareness and health care. The series is mottoed "I Got Vaccinated", which is more meaningful than just "Get Vaccinated!", Dimitrova explained. Hence the videos feature not only doctors and scientists but also to popular figures across the professional spectrum who say why they opted to get inoculated and how the pandemic has changed their profession and lives, she said.

Three episodes have been released so far, and they can be watched on the UNABG Facebook and YouTube pages: (https://www.facebook.com/UNABulgaria and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtV4x_kiEmpj6GpnUhM3s7w).

In the first episode, Dr Radosveta Stamenkova, Executive Director of the Bulgarian Family Planning and Sexual Health Association (BFPA), discusses the fake news circulating online that COVID-19 vaccines cause infertility and explains why pregnant women are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

In the second video, Assoc. Prof. Dr Michail Okoliyski, a psychiatrist and a National Professional Officer at the World Health Organization Country Office in Bulgaria, talks about mental illness and COVID-19 misconceptions and the psychological toll of the pandemic with its common reactions of either denial or panic.

In the third episode, actor and producer Alexandar Aleksiev shares his thoughts about people taking their health for granted and his trust in science.

UNABG was established in 1948 and coordinates the Bulgarian Youth Delegate to the United Nations Programme. The organization is involved with human rights education, Sustainable Development Goals, and a culture of peace, tolerance and non-violence. UNABG has a network of UN clubs in schools in 25 cities across Bulgaria. Most members of the association are young people and participate on a volunteer basis. DT/LG
