Nessebar will host the 53rd Balkan Sailing Championship, organizers from the Bulgarian Sailing Federation announced here on Friday. Between October 16 and 19, the Black Sea resort town will welcome 110 yachts from six countries in the region, which will compete in the waters off Nessebar for the top spots.
With the Balkan Championships, the Bulgarian Sailing Federation is reviving the prestigious competition after a six-year hiatus. The last edition of the championship was held in Montenegro in 2019.
Some of the most prominent competitors from Serbia, Romania, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkiye, and Bulgaria have confirmed their participation. Bulgaria will participate with full teams in all classes, with the hosts relying on their advantage of better knowledge of the local waters, which gives them a strong position for top rankings.
The competitive races will be held in three sailing classes: Optimist – for the youngest participants, ILCA 4 – junior single-seater class, and ILCA 6 – Olympic class. The chief judge of the championship will be Zlatko Jakelic, vice president of EURILCA, and the deputy chief judge will be Bulgarian Todor Ivanov.
