Grigor Dimitrov has sustained a partial tear of his right pectoralis major muscle, medical tests have confirmed, his manager Georgi Stoimenov told the specialized tennis news website TennisKafe.
Bulgaria’s top-ranked player suffered the injury early in the third set of his fourth-round Wimbledon match against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Dimitrov was leading 6–3, 7–5, 2–2 when he was forced to retire, unable to move his right arm independently. A victory over Sinner would have taken him to his first Wimbledon quarterfinal since 2014, when he reached the semi-finals at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
The good news for the 34-year-old Dimitrov is that the tear is not complete, and his recovery is expected to take only a few weeks. He will not undergo surgery but will instead follow a rehabilitation programme. This leaves open the possibility of Dimitrov competing at the US Open, which begins in New York on August 24.
However, the Bulgarian will miss several tournaments in the lead-up, including Bastad (clay) and the Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati (hard court), which he had initially planned to compete in.
