Hiking in the higher parts of the mountains is not recommended, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) told BTA on Tuesday.
The weather is cloudy, foggy, with strong northwesterly winds blowing in the high parts, the MRS said. Temperatures range between minus 1C and 9C.
During the past 24 hours, a rescue service team has helped a lost tourist around Chepelare, Southern Bulgaria. The man had to be lowered with ropes as the terrain was very rugged. The hiker was not injured, the MRS added.
In the mountains it will be mostly cloudy, on the ridges and foggy, said the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). There will be rain showers, snow will fall above 2,000 metres, with thunderstorms in places in the Rila-Rhodope region. Strong northwesterly wind will blow. The maximum temperature at an altitude of 1,200 metres will be about 11C, at 2,000 metres - about 5C.
