Sports Minister Ivan Peshev gave a special address on the occasion of the Bulgarian Sport Day on Saturday. “On this day in 1894 a group of Swiss teachers arrived in Bulgaria and laid the foundations of the organised sports movement in our country - a historic event that marked the beginning of our glorious sporting history,” he noted.
“Athletes are an asset to our society and it is our commitment and responsibility to educate and build not only successful elite athletes, but also healthy and active young people who have chosen sport as their vocation,” he added.
Peshev called for “a well-deserved gratitude to all great athletes who have brought national pride and left an unforgettable mark in the history of sport in the country and in the hearts of generations of Bulgarians.”
“The values that sport inculcates - honesty, respect and tolerance - are precisely those that make it one of the most powerful tools for uniting people and nations in the name of peace,” he said.
