The ratio of taxes in the European Union (EU), including net social contributions, to gross domestic product (GDP) rose from 39.9% in 2023 to 40.4% last year. In the eurozone, the ratio rose from 40.5% to 40.9%, according to the latest Eurostat data published on Friday.

In Bulgaria, taxes and net social contributions, presented as a share of GDP, rose from 30% in 2023 to 30.5 % in 2024. Thus, last year Bulgaria ranked fourth in the EU in terms of tax burden relative to economic output, after Ireland (22.4%), Romania (28.8%) and Malta (29.3%). 

In 2022, the tax-to-GDP ratio in Bulgaria reached its highest point since 2004 – 31.1%, according to Eurostat data.

In absolute terms, tax and social security revenues in the EU increased by EUR 387 billion in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching EUR 7.281 trillion.

The highest tax-to-GDP ratios are in Denmark (45.8%), France (45.3%) and Belgium (45.1%).
