An international forum titled "Black Sea 2030: Partnership for a Sustainable Future" opened at the Burgas International Congress Centre on Friday. Policymakers, researchers, business executives and regional stakeholders discuss the future of sustainable blue growth in the Black Sea region at the event which is organized by Burgas Municipality. The forum aims to foster dialogue and cooperation for a greener, more innovative, and resilient Black Sea.

"The Black Sea region needs bold ideas and responsible solutions, as well as technologies that do not destroy but restore and policies that not only adapt but also transform," Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said in a video address to the forum.

Stankov emphasized that the Black Sea region is not just a geographical space but an area where economy, energy, transport, culture and environment are intertwined. The Minister argued that the region should be viewed as "a centre of opportunities, where Europe meets Asia, innovation meets nature, and sustainable development meets the real needs of people".

"Bulgaria believes that the blue economy is the key to the balance between growth and conservation, between energy and the environment," Stankov noted, adding that in the coming years the State will focus its efforts on investments in clean energy, smart infrastructure and modern ports that will turn the Bulgarian Black Sea coast into an engine of green and digital development.

He insisted that a vision of building energy connectivity between the countries of the region must be followed, including from Burgas and Varna to Constanta in Romania, Odesa in Ukraine, Batumi in Georgia and Istanbul in Turkiye. "My task as Energy Minister is to invest efforts in projects that have the potential to turn the region into an energy bridge between the continents. And this bridge must be sustainable, secure and open to the future," Stankov concluded his remarks.

The forum will feature a video address from Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, and a keynote intervention by Charlina Vicheva, Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) at the European Commission.
